The legal status of marijuana in Canada is under dispute. Superior and appellate courts in Ontario have repeatedly declared Canada’s marijuana laws to be of no force and effect. However, challenges to marijuana laws at the federal level have not resulted in the deletion of the appropriate articles from the Criminal Code of Canada and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Police and prosecution services in other Canadian jurisdictions still pursue criminal charges for marijuana possession.

The cultivation of cannabis is currently illegal in Canada, with exceptions only for medical usage. However, the use of cannabis by the general public is broadly tolerated, and a vigorous campaign to legalize cannabis is underway nation-wide.

Several polls since 2003 have found that a majority of Canadians agreed with the statement, “The use of marijuana should be legalized”, the latest being the 2009 Angus Reid poll. The recent development after the last election is however the opposite, a much more restrictive law with higher minimum penalties for drug crimes and a national anti-drug strategy including prevention and treatment.

Cannabis, also known as marijuana , marihuana,or ganja (from Nepali/Urdu/Hindi/Sanskrit: गांजा/گانجا gañjā, hemp) refers to any number of preparations of the cannabis plant intended for human consumption as a drug, the most common of which being the natural herbal form.

The herbal form of the drug consists of mature female flowers and sub-tending leaves of pistillate (female) plants. The resinous form, known as hashish, consists primarily of glandular trichomes collected from the same plant material. The major biologically active chemical compound in cannabis is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), commonly referred to as THC.

Humans’ consumption of cannabis pre-dates history. In the 20th century there was a considerable increase in its use for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. It is estimated that about four percent of the world’s adult population (162 million) use cannabis annually and 0.6 percent (22.5 million) daily. The possession, use, or sale of psychoactive cannabis products became illegal in most parts of the world in the early 20th century. Since then, some countries have intensified the enforcement of cannabis prohibition while others have reduced the priority of enforcement.

INDOORS & OUTDOORS – CONSTANT HARVEST STRATEGY

One of the best solutions to energy verses output for most home gardeners is to use outdoor light for flowering and use continuous light indoors for germination and vegetative growth. This will take advantage of the natural light/dark cycle and
cut your energy use in half compared to the same operation indoors. A small greenhouse can be built of Filon fiberglass or
PVC sheets that is innocuous and looks much like a storage shed or tool shed so it’s not likely to raise suspicions.

In fact, a large shed of metal or plywood can be modified with a luminous roof of PVC, glass, fiberglass or plastic sheet, and some strains that do not require a great deal of light will grow well. Such a shed will discourage fly-by sightings and keep your business your own! It also allows you to keep out rats and gophers, keeps out the neighbor kids, and can be easily locked up. It will also give you an opportunity to actually marijuana plant in the ground if you desire, and this is the best way to avoid root-bound cannabis plants (if your not using hydroponics), and get bigger harvests.

In winter, indoor space is used to start new seedlings or cuttings to be placed outside in the spring, using natural sunlight to ripen the marijuana plants. This routine will provide at least 3 outdoor/greenhouse harvests per year. If more space is available to constantly be starting indoors and flowering 2nd harvest cannabis plants outdoors, harvests are possible every 60 days in many areas, with a small indoor harvest in the winter as a possibility as well.

The basic strategy of year round production is to understand the marijuana plant has two growth cycles. At germination the cannabis plant enters into a vegetative state and will be able to use all the continuous light you can give it. This means there is no dark cycle required. The marijuana plant will photo-synthesis constantly and grow faster than it would outdoors with long evenings.

Photosynthesis stops during dark periods and the cannabis plant uses sugars produced to build during the evening. This is not a requirement and the marijuana plant will grow faster at this stage with continuous photosynthesis (constant light). Once the cannabis plant is 12-18″ tall, weather permitting, it can be forced to start flowering by placing it outside in the Spring or Fall. (For Summer outdoor flowering, the night must be artificially lengthened in the greenhouse to “force” the marijuana plants to flower.
(See FLOWERING chapter.)

Moving the cannabis plants to 10-13 hour light periods (moving it outside) with uninterrupted darkness (no bright lights nearby) will force the marijuana plant to flower. It will ripen and be 2-3′ when ready to harvest. When a cannabis plant is moved from continuous indoor light to a 10-13 hour day outside, it will start to flower in anticipation of oncoming winter. Vegetative starts moved outside March 1st, will be ripe by May 1. Vegetative starts moved outside on May 1 will be ripe by July 1. Starts moved outside Sept 1 are picked by Nov. 1st. In Winter, operations are moved indoors and a crop is planted for seed in anticipation of planting outdoors the next summer, or just for some extra winter stash.

Keep in mind that the “man” is looking for marijuana plants in the Sept./Oct./Nov. time-frame, and may never notice cannabis plants placed outside to flower in April. Be smart, make your big harvest in May, not October!

DVD 1

Jorge Cervantes is a self proclaimed world-renowned expert on indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cannabis cultivation. With more than thirty years of cannabis growing knowledge and hands-on experience, his books, articles, photographs and instructional DVDs have been sold worldwide to apply simple, effective horticultural techniques to high-yield closet, basement, backyard, and guerrilla gardens.
Background
Jorge Cervantes developed his lifelong fascination with cannabis as a university student in Mexico. After graduation, he moved to California and lived in Milpitas with his parents in the 1970s where he became a guerrilla grower of sinsemilla (Spanish for without seeds) marijuana, the new high-quality cannabis that Mexicans reserved for domestic consumption. In the early 1980s, Cervantes started growing indoors, but a lack of credible information about indoor cultivation led him to author Indoor Marijuana Horticulture in 1983. The book became an instant best-seller, and successful indoor growers dubbed it the Indoor Growers Bible. Today growers simply call it The Bible. Now 52, Cervantes is a world-renowned expert on indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cannabis cultivation. Cervantes moved back to Spain where he lives near the Mediterranean Sea. He continues to photograph and write about cannabis as well as travel the world to research this fascinating medicinal plant.
