I know the drug is legal, im just curious if this is true

Officially the answer is no it is not legal to walk around smoking marijuana in Amsterdam, because marijuana is actually not legal in Amsterdam or the rest of the Netherlands.

Sales of marijuana (cannabis/weed whatever you want to call it) are 'tolerated' under certain conditions:
- no more than five grams per person may be sold in any one transaction;
- no hard drugs may be sold;
- drugs may not be advertised;
- the coffee shop must not cause any nuisance;
- no drugs may be sold to persons under the age of 18, nor may minors be admitted on the premises.

So if any of the above are broken or if for example you are caught for another misdemenour then you can so be charged for possession of marijuana as well.

As for walking around – it's not commonplace or either the "done" thing, but I have seen people from time to time, so I can't say it's not done either. It happens yes. However it's not the norm and Amsterdam is not a city of people walking around with a joint hanging out of their mouths.

EDIT @ Jamie – just because you have "done it" does not make it 'legal'! I assume from your name you are British/American, and in which case may I suggest that you try learning the difference between 'their' and 'there' in your native language before dictating Dutch law

Please people do not report this question. It is a serious question, and i am hoping for some serious responses that could help me make a decision in my life.

Anyways. IS there anybody out there that stared smoking at a young age. Meaning before you were 15 and smoked kinda regularly. At least 1x a week. Do you feel that marijuana has stopped you from growing to your maximum potential? Are there any scientific studies that have been done about smoking marijuana and it affecting your growth / devfelopment? Does it affect your growth?

i dont smoke but a friend of mine started young and still smokes regularly to this day and is 6'2'' i wont say he is dumb just doesnt have to much book smart. but he is still very capable of learning and retaining info. i will say the drug is not for everyone though.
