From the point where you plant the seed till you start getting bud, outdoors with no lamps.

The average outdoor strain will take between 6-9 months outdoors.
Some strains can flower in as little as 6 weeks, while some do not flower for 10-11 months.
A plant that will get 16 hours or more a day of sunlight will stay in its vegetative growth stage, then revert to flowering in Fall and Winter when light becomes 12 hours a day, with 12 hours of pure darkness, so planning when to plant from seed is important. Northern Hemisphere will usually flower (create buds) sooner than the Southern.
